Lipstick, Lip Gloss and Lip Liner
Lipstick
Lipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that applies color and texture to the lips. There are many varieties of lipstick. As with most other types of makeup, lipstick is typically worn by women. Lipstick is usually not worn until adolescence or adulthood.
Lipstick Ingredients
Lipstick contains a variety of wax, oils, and emollients. Wax helps the lipstick take a solid form and aids in ease of application. Lipsticks may be made from several waxes such as beeswax, carnauba wax, and candelilla wax. Different types of oils and fats are also used in lipsticks, such as olive oil, mineral oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum. More than 50% of lipsticks made in the United States contain pig fat, castor oil, which gives them a shiny appearance. Lipsticks get their colors from a variety of dyes including, but not limited to bromo acid, D&C Red No. 21, Calcium Lake such as D&C Red 7 and D&C Red 34, and D&C Orange No. 17. Pink lipsticks are made by mixing titanium dioxide and several red shades.
Matte lipsticks contain heavy waxes, but do not have many emollients. Sheer and long lasting lipstick contain a lot of oil, while long lasting lipsticks also contain silicone oil, which seals the colors to the wearer's lips. Creme lipsticks contain more waxes than oils. Glossy lipstick contain more oil to give a shiny finish to the lips. Shimmery lipstick may contain mica, silica, fish scales, and synthetic pearl particles to give them a glittery or shimmering shine.
Lipstick is made from grinding and heating ingredients. Then heated waxes are added to the mix for texture. Oils and lanolin are added for specific formula requirements. Afterwards, the hot liquid is poured onto a metal mold. The mixture is chilled and kept cool so that the lipsticks harden. Once they have hardened, they are heated in flame for half a second to create a shiny finish and to remove imperfections.
Lip Gloss
Lip gloss is a product used primarily to give lips a mildly glossy lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is distributed as a liquid or a soft solid (not to be confused with lip balm, which generally has medicinal purposes). It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of opacity, including frosted, glittered, glassy, and metallic finishes.
Types of Lip Gloss
Like lipstick, lip gloss comes in a variety of forms and may be applied in different ways. It can be contained in a small cylindrical bottle and applied with a rounded or sloped applicator wand (known as a doefoot applicator), be applied with a built in lip brush, or a small tube designed for application with the fingertip. Solid glosses come in boxes and tubes, sometimes blurring the distinction between lip gloss and lip balm.
New types of "plumping" lip gloss contain ingredients which make the lips appear softer and plumper. These are a cheap, easy, and harmless alternatives to collagen, Restylane, Juvederm, and/or fat injections, but are often not as effective. The effects are temporary and short-lasting.
Lip gloss is often used when a person wants to have some color on their lips, but does not want an intense, solid lip color effect (i.e. a more "made-up" look), as lipstick would create. Lip gloss is also often used as a sort of introduction to makeup. It's often used by preteen and young teenage girls who want to wear some makeup, but are too young to wear a more intense lipstick color.
Lip gloss is sometimes used with lipstick to create different effects (i.e. one with no color, metallic effect or glitter). 1950s actress Marilyn Monroe used to wear a clear, simple lip gloss over lipstick to make it shiny. Some people also mix clear lip gloss with any lipstick color to make colored lip glosses.
Lip Liner
Lip liner, also known as lip pencil, is a cosmetic product. It is intended to fill uneven areas on the outer edges of the lips after applying lipstick, therefore giving a smooth shape. It is also used to outline the lips, keeping lipstick inside the lip area and preventing it from "bleeding". The product is usually sold in a retractable tube or pencil form. Lip liner is usually available in the same range of colors as lipsticks: e.g., reds, pinks, browns, plums, etc.
